Rene Redzepi’s neo-Nordic Noma, has once again claimed the top of the prestigious S.Pellegrino , World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards, which was presented in London this week.
The awards, produced by Britain’s Restaurant Magazine, were unveiled after voting by a world wide panel of 837 chefs, restaurateurs, journalists and “gastronomes” who rated Noma’s leadership a “new guard” of global cuisine. The awards are now considered by many to be a greater achievement than a Michelin star, since they are voted by a board of peers. A position in the top 50 is also a huge economic boost for restaurants with Noma receiving over 100,000 bookings in 24 hours after claiming the number one spot in 2010!!!
The Fat Duck, Heston Blumenthal’s temple to “molecular gastronomy,” was the highest-ranked British restaurant, but dropped two places to number 5. Even without the inclusion of Spanish heavyweight El Bulli (who are closed this year) Spain managed to sneak the second and third spots pushing The Fat Duck down.
The newest UK entry on the list was Notting Hills, The Ledbury run by the young Australian chef Brett Graham. They are continuing a fantastic year after recently receiving a second Michelin Star. The Ledbury offers classic British food with a few twists, such as Cornish Sea Bass with Confit Squid, Buckwheat and Nasturtium; Fresh Curd of Hampshire Buffalo Milk with Wild Mushrooms; grouse and venison in season as well as roast suckling pig.
William Drew, the editor of Restaurant Magazine, which publishes the list, said: “The Ledbury has been getting better and better. It started off as a neighbourhood restaurant and it has a very loyal, local following. And slowly people from other parts of London have heard about it and started coming, and then soon the word spread quietly overseas”.
London’s St John moved a few points up to 41 as did Hibiscus to 43. The top 10 was dominated by restaurants in Europe, but the list includes restaurants from 20 countries, including Peru, China, Russia and Mexico.
