NYC Restaurant week has once again become Restaurant Month with all venues opting to continue their $24.07 lunch and $35 dinner menus through until Labour day! That is good news for us diners who want to sample some of the city’s best food at wallet friendly prices.
We have managed to fit in a few great meals on our NY trip and plan to get in a few more with the extended timeframe.
The standout so far was Iron Chef Morimoto‘s signature restaurant in Chelsea. We went to dine with a friend of ours who lives in Tokyo. She was suitably impressed with the meal. The restaurant itself is very modern with several different seating areas and a full view of the open kitchen. The offering for the weeks Lunch Menu was traditional Bento Boxes with a choice between Wagyu Beef and Black Cod. We all decided to order this but due to the insistence of our very lovely waiter, also ordered a few specialties off of the normal menu to share. The Spicy King Crab and Hamachi Tartare.
The King Crab was incredible with huge crab legs halved perfectly cooked and topped with a spicy sauce! I could have eaten the whole thing to myself, alas I had to share. The Hamachi was equally good but was overshadowed by the amazing crab.
Our Bento boxes were equally good and great value at $20. We recieved a subtle Miso soup, three pieces of Nigiri, Tuna roll, Tempura and the Wagyu beef or Cod. Both the beef and fish were wonderfully seasoned and the Sushi generous and very fresh. Morimoto is highly recomened for a light lunch in sophisticated surroundings.
We also tried the dinner menu at the Jean-Georges Vongeritchen’s Spice Market another very chic eatery in the meat packing district. The highlights were the Spiced Chicken Samosas with Cilantro Yogurt appetizer. For mains I had the Pollack with Malaysian Chili Sauce and Thai Basil, which was chocked full of flavor and perfectly cooked with flaky white flesh and super crispy skin. The Coconut Cake with Salted Caramel and Guava Ice Cream was a perfect finish to a fantastic meal.
Other standouts have been the Moulle et Frittes and Skate Wings at Artisinal.
