Joyce Wang’s London Tastin is a fresh new blog on the every growing London food writing scene. As you will see Joyce got into writing about amazing food experiences to counterbalance a boring office job! How many of us read about food to escape the exact same plight (not here at Mise En Place of course!!) We caught up with Joyce to chat about Food Blogging in London, you can find London Tastin here and Joyce on twitter @Londontastin (we really love the look of London Tastin blog!!) ….
What got you into food writing?
I’ve never thought of writing down all my favourite food spots still I got this really boring job at an accountant company. In order to keep myself feeling happy and have something to look forward to, to search for, to get excited about, I started this blog, which has done exactly all these things.
How do you choose a restaurant to review?
Everyone has their preferences; I love oriental food in particular and tend to keep an eye on the latest developments. Apart from that, Michelin chefs seem to get a lot of buzz on twitter, creating an urge to check out what the fuss is about.
How many restaurants do you eat out in per month?
About 12, I also go to lots of coffee shops and bakeries.
Who is your current favourite chef?
Hard to pick a favourite, if I have to maybe Brett Graham from the Ledbury (we are hearing this from a lot of bloggers Joyce, sadly we have still yet to eat there!)
What is your current favourite restaurant concept?
Cosy, down to earthy and cheap to eat
Most underrated Local Restaurant? (and maybe most overrated!)
Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse are definitely the most overrated restaurant. I love this tiny sushi bar called Yoshino and they don’t get much publicity, probably because they don’t have FB or twitter.
How has blogging in general changed your outlook on food/restaurants?
I used to only go to my regular restaurants, like going to Yoshino 2 times a week. Since starting this blog, I’ve discovered many many great restaurants that have amazing concepts and is always changing. Chefs have become celebrity like and twitter has become the main point of attraction with all the latest buzz.
What’s the biggest mistake a restaurant can make in your opinion?
Unhelpful staff, especially on the phone for reservations. Some restaurants are really bad at this, giving an email to book but won’t come back for days with a reply ‘our restaurant is fully booked but I have forwarded your information to our other restaurants’.
What has been your all-time favourite restaurant experience to date?
Yoshino! For tasting exactly the same all these years.
